So, back in February of 2009, I was shopping at Target when my agent called to tell me that STAY had sold.
I still don't remember what I'd gone in to buy. Handsoap? Laundry detergent? Dog toys? Whatever the item, it was probably an excuse to visit the book section, stare at all the covers, study all the imprints, and daydream about seeing my book on Target shelves one day. I was always particularly fond of Plume's beautiful covers for Jane Green's books (and Jane Green's books in general).
I can't say it ever felt like a realistic dream. It was actually more than my mind could completely fathom -- kind of the way I used to kiss frogs as a kid, hoping they'd turn into princes, even though I had a pretty good idea of what the odds were.
But, yesterday, while running errands with J at the very same Target, I pulled him over to the book section. And there it was: my very own beautiful Plume paperback, hanging out with one of Jane Green's beautiful Plume paperbacks.
If you know anything at all about me, I'm sure you can guess that there were happy tears involved. Me and crying happy tears in Target go way back.
But, I have J now, so I don't plan to kiss any frogs.

River Road Books & Mostly Shepherds!
Okay, so I guess I shouldn't promise to post something "tomorrow" ever again, because my version of tomorrow takes half a week, apparently. But oh, my goodness, I loved doing the STAY event at River Road Books in Fair Haven, NJ. I'm still smiling about it! Such a great group of people and wonderful dogs!
River Road Books is a beautiful book store run by a great group of book loving ladies! They're such a vital and vibrant part of the community, offering a summer reading program for kids, writing workshops, and other events. It's nice to see an indie bookstore that is thriving!
I read from STAY, answered questions, and signed books. Libby Cook from Mostly Shepherds talked about her amazing rescue organization, and showed off a few of the adoptable animals at Mostly Shepherds.
| Me & Gidget |
I love dogs in general, although I tend to be more of a big dog person, but I fell hard for Gidget. She's a Jack Russell/Pug mix (or "Jug") who acts like a big dog in a twelve pound package. She's so sweet and funny and I had the hardest time resisting the urge to smuggle her home in my handbag. Her listing is here, complete with an adorable video of her playing with a tennis ball that's almost as big as her head.
Libby had Magnum, a super smart German Shepherd with a long stock coat (like Argo's), do a few tricks for the crowd. He'd only had two obedience classes before the event and he was already performing like a pro. You can see a video of Magnum working on his obedience training on his listing here. He was so calm, considering the crowd of people!
| Magnum & Libby |
One of the people at the event was a lovely woman who had adopted a German Shepherd from Libby about ten years ago. She got up and talked about how her dog changed her life. It was so moving! She also said that German Shepherds are one of the more frequently abused breeds. New dog owners mistakenly think that because German Shepherds are big, powerful dogs, they need to be handled roughly, but the most important thing an owner needs to train a German Shepherd is love.

What she said has stuck with me, because it's so true! Positive reinforcement goes a long way with German Shepherds. What they want most is to be a part of a pack. When you love them and bond with them and make sure they know they belong with you, they will do everything they can to make you happy. Giving them the opportunity to succeed goes a lot further than any kind of harsh correction ever could. I think it's also important to note that herding dogs are wired a little differently from other breeds, and even if you're an experience dog owner, if you've never had a herding dog, doing research and talking to people with herding breed experience will be incredibly helpful.
It was so nice to spend time chatting with people who love books and German Shepherds as much as I do! If you're in the New Jersey area and are thinking about adopting a dog, get in touch with Libby and Mostly Shepherds. She's very mindful of matching the right owners to the right dog, and is a genuinely beautiful and inspiring person. It was an honor to meet her.
There was also a kitty in attendance, but I believe she's been adopted. However, Mostly Shepherds has a few more adoptable cats listed.
Roberta Van Anda from the Rumson-Fair Haven Patch was there and posted about the event, so you can read more about it, and see more pictures here.
Before the event, I had a great little walk down
Now I'm back home, doing some writing, gearing up for my event in Batavia at Present Tense Books next week, and cuddling with my German Shepherds.
I was only gone for a night, but they get pretty clingy when I've been away.
Oh, and if you haven't already entered, I'm giving away five copies of STAY plus gourmet dog cookies!

Things that have happened - The Epic List Post
Wow, I've had blog back up syndrome. There are too many things I've been meaning to blog about, but I haven't gotten around to blogging, because I feel like I need to address the things I should have posted about before I get to current stuff. So here is an epic list post to catch you up. With pictures. Because pictures are good.
A few weeks ago, there was an airshow that seemed to happen directly over our house ALL weekend.
Stella was terrified. Argo was curious. Not about the planes. He didn't notice them, even when the windows rattled and the ground shook. Argo was curious as to why I was lying on my back with the camera in the back yard.
I made a video.
I went to an awesome book club that Steph the Bookworm organized! And had such a wonderful time chatting about STAY and other books we love!

I wrote a lot (no pictures).
STAY came out in paperback, and to celebrate, I did a reading at the Greece Barnes & Noble, and spent a lovely afternoon at the Syracuse University Bookstore Book Fair for the second time, signing books with David Klein and Joan Ford.
And got to visit with my favorite Bigfoot novelist. After the fair, I had dinner with The Other 1/4, and no cars were lost.
I had a blast hanging out with dog lovers at a STAY signing and Bark-B-Q at A Barker's Dozen, and got to meet Lucky, who is a super sweet adoptable Giant Schnauzer mix. Lucky will be listed with Going to the Dogs Rescue after he gets a little extra training from Tails of Success.
Last week, I went to Edison, New Jersey to shoot a segment for The Pet Stop on New Jersey 12! The segment aired last weekend locally, and I'll be sure to post it here when it's up on YouTube later this month.

It's kind of mind-blowing all over again. . .
On June 10th, STAY turned one year old, and the paperback will be out on July 26th. I thought that I'd (finally) pretty much gotten used to the whole I wrote a book and it's on bookshelves and people other than my writing group have read it thing.
And then I was on my way out the door yesterday when this showed up:
Even though I'd already seen the front cover art, I hadn't seen the whole beautifully designed package, (with the cutest little puppy backside ever on the book's backside).
And then there are review quotes, and a brand new blurb from one of my favorite writers smack dab on the front cover. I can't play it cool about this. It just felt so surreal, and I needed someone to pinch me all over again. I sat in my car, but didn't start it, and flipped through the paperback and read all the quotes on the inside page and turned into a big weepy mess all over again. If I'd known the book were coming, I would have totally worn waterproof mascara.
So, Happy (slightly be-lated) Birthday to Van & Joe, and a huge huge HUGE thank you to everyone who has read STAY, and come to events, and blogged and tweeted about STAY, and recommended it to friends and family, and e-mailed me to share their broken heart stories and friend stories and dog stories. This year has been the most incredible adventure. It's not something I think I'll ever quite get used it, in a good way. And it's not something I ever take for granted. I am so honored to get to share stories with all of you.

Things I'm absurdly excited about
With the holidays, friends in town, and several people I love having birthdays, last week got a little crazy around here, and I didn't get to blog at all. I'm working on a year end wrap up post for later in the week, but a few things have had me jumping for joy & shouting "Mrs. X can suck it!" recently, and I wanted to share!
- The cover above is the standard German version of STAY from Weltbild! The title translates to "Sit! Place! (or stay) Love!" And I'm completely and totally in love with it. I didn't know it was out until a reader left me a comment in German on the Facebook page on New Year's Day. It was such a fantastic way to start the year!
- When I did a Google search for the German title, I discovered that I'm listed in the German National Library. I know this is kind of a "well, duh, of course you are, because your book is out in Germany," thing, but honestly, it's completely BLOWING MY MIND. I really thought the break-down-in-massive-amounts-of-happy-tears-still-can't-believe-this-is-real thing would start to fade eventually, but so far it hasn't. Every little step of the way, I have moments when I so desperately wish I could go back in time to Mrs. X's classroom to give my heartbroken little teenage-self a big hug, and tell her that it gets oh-so-much better and someday she'll write something that will end up on shelves in libraries in countries she hasn't even had the chance to visit yet. Because it really would have helped to know that back then. Plus, if I did that, I'd totally get to travel in the Tardis, right?
- Right before the holidays, Euromedia picked up the Czech rights to STAY!

Signed Copies of STAY!

1. Call the Greece, NY Barnes & Noble at 585-227-4020 and tell them you'd like to order a signed copy of STAY. Make sure to let them know that you want it signed, so they don't ship it out immediately. They'll take you through the order process.
2. E-mail me at info at allielarkinwrites.com to let me know that you've ordered a book from the Greece B&N store. Include details about who you'd like me to sign the book to, and anything specific you'd like me to write.
That's all! They'll hold on to the book, and I'll run down (well, I won't actually run, because it's cold outside!) and sign it for you. I'll reply to your e-mail to tell you when I'll be in the store next, so you'll know when to expect your book. And, in all honesty, I will take any excuse I can find to stop by the bookstore, so it won't be more than a day or two.
There's a $3.99 charge for shipping, and if you're ordering by phone you can only ship to the billing address for your credit card. If you go to the Greece B&N to order a book in person, you can have it shipped to a different address. And if you have a B&N member card, be sure to let them know when you call.

Book Club!

We had such a great chat, and it means so much to me to have had the chance to talk with them. They asked about my writing process, and what my day to day life looks like. We talked about what it feels like to have a girlfriend who always seems just a little more perfect than you are, why Van felt the way she did about Diane, and what Peter was really about to say when he was interrupted. One of the ladies said she enjoyed watching Van grow as a person. Then another chimed in to say that she felt like she grew as a person reading STAY. She said that she had instant opinions about Diane, Janie, and Peter, and as she read further and learned more about the whys of who they are, it changed how she felt about them. This made her think about how sometimes we're too quick to judge people without trying to figure out where they're coming from.
I am honored by what she said, and everyone's kind words about STAY. I think the biggest gift of being a writer is to hear that what I wrote means something to readers, and I am so thankful for this.
It was a wonderful way to spend an evening! And they sent me home with treats for all of my furry friends and a lovely plant that is brighting up my office so much on this dark and dreary day! So sweet!
Thank you so much, Holy Trinity Book Club!
*Fun trivia: The "tagline" for the town of Webster, NY (which is, admittedly, quite lovely) is "Where Life is Worth Living," and it has always amused me. Apparently, it's not worth it elsewhere. I guess we'll have to move. :)

I swear I don't need a refresher on the days of the week
I know, I know, I missed a Friday again. It's not that I don't know what day is which, it's that I was so completely and totally exhausted on Friday that the idea of posting felt ridiculously involved and difficult. Ah, the joys of ADD. I swear the tagline for ADD (you know, if we were to all start promoting it) should be "Making molehills seem like mountains since 1798.*"
*The year Sir Alexander Crichton used the term "mental restlessness" to describe what we now call ADD. And, of course, I do realize that ADD existed before anyone was writing stuff about it. In fact, there may actually be a reason some of us evolved this way.
So, here's the final Friday prize - In addition to all the other fun stuff you'll get if you win, I'm throwing a signed ARC of STAY into the prize pack. ARCs are printed as review copies before the book comes out. There's only a small batch printed and once they're gone, they're gone, so they become something of a rarity. Submit your STAY photo before 10/31 to enter!
The reading at Fisher on Thursday was wonderful. I got to have dinner with faculty and a great group of students before the main event. When I got to the reading, I was stunned by how packed the room was! I had a blast. I read from the writing exercise that started STAY and the short story I wrote from the exercise, before I read a few selections from STAY. The students asked a bunch of questions no one has asked me before, I got to meet Steph (on the left) finally, and one of the students asked me to write "Mrs. X can suck it" in his book when I signed it. It was awesome.
And the day before that, I visited M. J. Iuppa's fiction class. STAY was actually course-adopted, and it was so much fun to be able to talk about the book with the class, knowing everyone had read it. Usually, when I talk with a group about STAY there's so much I have to avoid talking about so I don't spoil anything for the people who haven't read it yet. It was neat to talk in-depth about the ending and how I got there, and hear their ideas on the Van/Janie/Diane/Natalie dynamic.
This week I'm going to a book club! STAY was their pick for this month. It'll be my first book club chat and I'm really looking forward to it.
And, today I'm doing laundry, paying bills, answering e-mail, listening to Toad, wallowing in the icky grey weather, drinking absurd amounts of pumpkin spice tea, and possibly catching up on Desperate Housewives later while I eat lunch. It always amazes me how real life sneaks back in after a crazy whirlwind week.
What's on your agenda?

You can't take me anywhere!
I made an appearance on 13 WHAM News this Morning on Rochester's CW, and had so much fun doing it. Evan Dawson is wonderful and everyone at 13 WHAM is so nice!
Before the interview, I had a little anxiety. What if I get the hiccups? What if I fall off the interview chair in the middle of the interview? What if I trip on the way to the interview chair and break my nose just in time for the cameras to start rolling? What if I take a few cameras out on the way down? You know, the usual things normal people worry about. Right?
But Evan is so gracious and everyone was very friendly and I really did feel comfortable. I checked myself in the full length mirror just outside the studio door to make sure I didn't have any dog slobber on my sleeve or lipstick on my teeth. I was good to go and I didn't even feel nervous. It was a blast to see Argo's photos on the big screen behind me. And it was surprisingly easy to focus on just having a chat with Evan about the book, instead of thinking "Oh my goodness! Live TV!"
No broken noses. No broken cameras. No hiccups. I didn't even fall off the chair.
We finished the segment. I shook hands with Evan and his co-host after the show went to commercial. A man wearing an earpiece came up and put his hand out. I shook it. Turns out, he was actually asking for the wireless mic back. So, I felt a little silly, but we laughed about it.
When I went to unhook said mic from my pants, I noticed that my fly was open, and realized that it had been for the entire interview. And then I felt really silly. So, of course, I said to the nice man with the earpiece "Oh my gosh, my fly is open. That's really horrible." The words just fell right out of my mouth. Because, you know, it's important to call attention to things like that when they happen. No one notices if you don't.
The man with the earpiece kindly assured me that no one could tell. From now on, I'm adding fly to my pre-appearance check list. No dog slobber - check. Lipstick-free teeth - check. Fly . . .
But hey, an open fly no one can see anyway is way better than a broken nose, and I can't help but feel like Van would be proud. Or at least very very sympathetic.

An Interview with Julia Whelan

When I first heard STAY was going to be an audiobook, I thought it was pretty cool, but I also thought it might be strange to hear someone else reading my work. I honestly wasn't sure if I'd want to listen to it.
Then, I heard Brilliance was doing the audiobook, and well, when it comes to audio books, it doesn't get better than Brilliance. And then I got to talk with Julia Whelan before she recorded STAY to go over name pronunciations, etc. From our talk, I could tell that she really "got" Van, and all of a sudden I couldn't wait to hear the audio version.
At the risk of sounding completely sappy, I am so so thankful to Brilliance and Julia. Because of them, I got to HEAR my characters. Julia's reading of STAY is what Van sounds like in my head. And getting to hear her read my words is an absolute gift. So, I'm going to add the Stay
I got to visit Brilliance while I was in Michigan in July and had a wonderful time touring the studios and meeting everyone. It's a company run by people who care so passionately about bringing books to life. It was exciting to be there. I loved learning about the process of how a printed book becomes an audio book, and wanted to post about it, but I thought it might be more interesting coming from Julia.
AL:How did you get started recording audio books?
JW: Actually, one of my best friends from college is a narrator (Ellen Grafton). We were both English majors at Middlebury and studied together at Oxford for a year. Her mother, Laura, works for Brilliance Audio. Knowing my background in acting and my degree in English and Creative Writing, she suggested that I submit a demo. Actors who can read obviously make good narrators! Kidding. I actually discovered that narrating is a completely different skill than either reading or acting. So I took five pages out of four books that I thought showed some range (i.e. accents, straight narration, men vs. women voices, different genres, etc), worked with my coach on them, and sent it off to Laura. To my surprise, she responded by sending me two YA titles to record, and I was off and running. I enjoyed the recording process immensely, and was anxious to do more. Somewhere along the line I was given some adult titles to record, thus allowing me to branch out from YA. STAY was my 9th book.
In fact, with STAY, Laura emailed me and wrote, “We have a book for you. Contemporary romance (light romance)” – she knows I don’t do the graphic stuff – “about a girl with a broken heart who drunkenly buys a dog off the internet. It looks adorable!”
Me: The dog doesn’t give her advice, does it?Laura: Nope!Me: I’m in!
AL:How do you prepare to record a book?
JW: I read the manuscript with a trusty yellow legal pad next to me. I write down every character name that appears, and any defining features they have, especially any vocal hints (such as, “she rasped, in her distinctive husky timbre”… that kind of thing). Then, I write down any words I don’t know how to pronounce. This list can become embarrassingly long. I consider myself a pretty well-read person, but how often do we read outloud? And there are some words that exist almost exclusively in the written form. For instance, when was the last time someone said, in real life, “His hair was tousled from sleep?” (It’s pronounced TOW-sulled, by the way). Or “she clambered up the stairs.” (The B? Not so silent.) I’m sure many people know this stuff, but I didn’t, and on more than one occasion I’ve felt like a complete idiot. As I read the book, I put a character’s initials in the left margin, before their line of dialogue, so I know who is speaking before I get half-way through a line and realize, “Oops, that was supposed to the French grandfather, not the eight year-old girl.” I also highlight any vocal intent next to the dialogue, such as “he whispered,” or “she screamed” so, hopefully, I can see it coming before I even start the line. Then I look up all the words I don’t know how to pronounce, develop whatever voices I need, try to find recorded examples of the obscure accents that are undoubtedly in the book, and hope that I’m doing the story – and the author – justice. Everyone preps a book differently, but I’ve found that this process works for me.
AL: What is the recording process like? How long does it take to record a novel?
JW: I honestly think someone needs to film the process, it’s pretty hilarious. Imagine a small, windowless, padded room with nothing but a chair, a music stand, a microphone, and a bottle of water in it. Then picture a scruffy, unkempt narrator (at least in my case) sitting in that chair, trying to read the pages spread out on the music stand while keeping their mouth close to the microphone. Add in the occasional stomach growl, unflattering mouth noise, and expletive when they mess up, and you pretty much have one of the weirdest jobs ever. To further complicate matters, the microphone is ridiculously sensitive. Every little noise shows up. And I mean EVERY. You learn a lot about yourself, though. For instance, if I don’t have a big bowl of oatmeal in the morning, my stomach is growling so loudly by lunchtime, we have to stop recording. Even if I’m not hungry! Only oatmeal can cure this, for some reason. And my wrist cracks. Until I started recording, I thought my wrist crack was only something I could feel, not something that could be heard. So no flamboyant gesturing while I’m reading.
When you mess up – and you will mess up – the engineer saves you. You just take it back to the first solid space in the reading you can find (the previous sentence, comma, sometimes even a breath) and start over. Gone are the days of cutting and splicing tape (not that I was around for those days… jeeze, listen to me, the hard-bitten veteran).
How long a novel takes to record depends on the novel: the size of the font, the layout, how many complicated characters there are, how many run-on sentences there are that only an alien could get through in one go, and whether or not I’ve had my oatmeal. I usually average about 150 pages a day. And a day is a normal working day… that is, about 8 hours, with the occasional fifteen minute breaks and lunch. So I think I did STAY in two days. I know that seems fast, but it read so easily that at times it felt like it was reading me!
AL: I get hoarse from talking on the phone for forty minutes! How do you manage to read an entire novel out loud and keep your voice working the whole time?
JW: A lot of training. I have really extensive vocal training, stage actor training. At least with audiobooks you don’t have to project to the back row of a 1,000 seat house! I have found, though, that flipping between different accents can cause some vocal strain. Apparently different accents work different parts of the vocal chords. I did a book where the main character was from North Carolina, all the other characters were from Maine, and the sexy hero was Irish. I didn’t talk much after I got off work that day! Also, low, husky male voices can get a little sore after awhile. And then I’ll listen to the book later and think: “That’s not deep at all! I really worked for that, and it just sounds like me with a cold!” But we’re always our harshest critics, right? Right?
AL: What's your favorite part of recording?
JW: Losing myself in the story. If I didn’t have to turn the page (and if I never messed up!) I’d just keep going and going. (I did hear from fellow narrator Ray Porter that he’s experimented with reading off an iPad and loves it! Silent page turning! Might have to look into it… plus, I’d be going completely green, something I know you could get behind, Allie!)
Look, I’m a reader first and foremost. I wind up loving every book I record, even if it’s not something I’d ever pick up at the store. Because I connect to it, and invest in it, and hope – above all else – that I’m doing the author’s intent justice. As a writer myself, I can’t imagine someone else reading my work. But I have had the most wonderfully complimentary and supportive authors… especially you, Allie. It was an honor – and more importantly, way too much fun – to record STAY!

STAY Reader Photos!
Okay, so the STAY on Vacation project got a little confusing. There were photos on the Facebook page (but apparently the upload process is complicated) and some on Twitter (but apparently the Twitter archives are often hard to access), so I decided to simplify things.
Now, you can upload photos directly to AllieLarkinWrites.com, so we're moving over there!
Take a photo of STAY in your life - with your dogs, on vacation, with a friend, at a cafe, or hanging out around the house, and upload it to be entered to win a $50 iTunes gift card! When we reach 50 photos, I'm going to add a STAY-themed prize to the pack. If we hit 100 photos, I'll add something else. You can see where this is going . . .
One entry per person, and, unfortunately, we have to limit this one to US only.
Can't wait to see your pictures!!!

Notes from the road
I'm in Denver! I haven't seen much of the city yet, but from what I've seen, I love it! And, as someone with asthma, I am amazed by just how well I can breathe here. I can totally understand why Asthma Mom moved her family here. I went running this morning and my body tired out (altitude) but my lungs didn't. It's wonderful! And gorgeous!
And I get to stay with my dear friend, M, her adorable fiance, and their sweet, sweet dogs (one of whom is lying at my feet while I type).
I'm speaking at a creative writing class at Regis University this afternoon, and reading at Tattered Cover tonight. I am SO excited! I am addicted to the Authors On Tour podcasts and have been hearing about the legendary Tattered Cover stores for years and years now. To be completely honest, I would be in total awe to just get to visit Tattered Cover, so to get to READ there is just beyond my comprehension. And I'm going to get to meet some blog friends I've known since I started blogging in person (finally).
Also, if you see pigs flying around, it's because . . . . I IRONED. I'm not joking. I actually ironed the dress I'm going to wear tonight. Ten bucks says I'm all wrinkled my the time I get there, but I will have started out the evening neatly pressed. That's got to count for something, right?
The event at Treehouse Books in Holland, MI was wonderful! I had so much fun! The room was completely packed and we had a great discussion going. I really love getting to talk with people who come to readings. I learn so much about how other people approach writing and reading. J's family and family friends came out in full force! And I got to meet a blog friend I've known for years.
On Saturday, we spent the day out on Lake Michigan with the family. Perfect weather, so much fun, and a chance to make sandcastles with my niece and nephew. Awesome!
I think I did a pretty good job packing for this leg of my trip, thanks to all of your tips, but I still feel like my suitcase exploded everywhere the second I opened it. I've seen some travel pouches for clothes on a few sites. Maybe I need to consider packing every day's clothes in it's own pouch? Is that going too far?
I'm traveling with just an iPad and cannot for the life of me figure out how to get photos into this post. So, I'm going to just direct you over to my flickr page to see photos from the Treehouse Books event. I'm really not sure what I think about this iPad - on the one hand, watching Entourage on the airplane = awesome, as does not lugging my big heavy laptop. On the other hand, no track changes in Pages KILLS me, and all my blog posting interfaces feel kind of buggy. So, I feel like traveling without my laptop is still a bit of a handicap. The jury is still out on this one.
And I get to stay with my dear friend, M, her adorable fiance, and their sweet, sweet dogs (one of whom is lying at my feet while I type).

STAY on vacation!
Here's the deal:
Take STAY with you when you travel this summer, and snap a picture (like the ones my fabulous editor sent me)!
Tweet the photos of STAY on Twitter with the location and the tag #STAYnovel in the text.
Or add your photos to the "Fan Photos" section of the Allie Larkin Writes page. Include the location of the photo in the caption.
If you're not traveling this summer, feel free to do the same with photos of STAY in your hometown.
We're hoping to get at least one photo from all 50 states, and if we do, we'll add a surprise bonus prize.
If you've already sent me a photo, please feel free to tweet it or add it to the Facebook page following giveaway rules. Please only post each photo once, either on Twitter OR Facebook. We're only going to count each photo once, even if there are duplicates.
We'll be collecting photos all summer, and will announce a winner in September.
Good luck & safe travels!

Cameras need batteries

I am so amazed by Seattle. There's so much to do right in out directly outside of the city. Lady is an amazing tour guide. We went out to the shore to look for tiny sea creatures under rocks (one of my all time favorite activities. It's been grey and rainy, but still absolutely gorgeous.

I got to have brunch with a high school friend who relocated to Seattle. I hadn't seen her since 1994. And I got to meet her amazing husband and adorable little boy (seriously, seriously adorable). I am completely in love with the way it's possible to sit down with old friends and pick up where you left off like it hasn't been 16 years.
In other news, my agent, Rebecca Strauss drew a name in the query contest. Congratulations to Vicki Lane! I will send you an e-mail with instructions on how to submit your query letter and sample pages to Rebecca. And thanks to Corinne and Wendy for being a part of the contest!!!
I have a guest post up at The Lipstick Chronicles. Please stop over and say hi!
The lovely Nancy Pearl Wannabe put up a post about STAY that made me cry (in a good way).
Life with Dogs is giving away a copy of STAY.
Debbie's Book Bag posted a review of STAY.
Flurrious is reading dog books!
And Trish Ryan (who's new book A MAZE OF GRACE hits stores tomorrow!!!) posted about STAY too!

Third Place Books!

Third Place Books is a truly amazing place. I had a wonderful time at the reading last night! When we got there, they were hosting Reading with Rover, a program where kids can spend some quality quiet time reading to specially trained dogs. It's such an amazing program!
I got to speak in front of a shelves full of signed first edition books to a great group of people. And, I got to meet blog & Twitter friends Rob, Ana, Lacey, and Mindi, in person!
Lady made me pose with the display of STAY books.
And I got pictures with Mindi (who will be reading at Third Place this fall),
Rob is giving away a signed copy of STAY at his blog, Rob's World!

After the reading we got to hang out in the food court at Third Place, and chat for a bit. It was such a great night, and I am so thankful to everyone who made it out to the reading!
Today, we went hiking at Rattlesnake Ledge. The weather was amazing, and the views were spectacular!

And then we finished up the day with an absolutely incredible dinner at Agua Verde. Seattle is such a wonderful city!
Allison Winn Scotch (who just announced the winners of the amazing book giveaway) is reading at the Pacific Place Barnes & Noble in Seattle on Tuesday. I'm so excited that I will still be in Seattle and I can attend!
Links time!!! And, again, if I left out your link, feel free to give me a nudge. I am so far away from my normal office routine, and it's made me a tad bit flaky. I can't tell you how much I appreciate these posts. It's amazing to hear your thoughts on STAY and how you related to the story. I love it! Thank you! And keep an eye out for a really cool contest coming up very soon!

So much amazing stuff going on!
Well, the query contest will close tomorrow and I'll announce the winner on Monday. If you haven't entered, you can go to this post to learn more about it!
And there's another amazing contest going on! Allison Winn Scotch has organized "the mother of all giveaways." TWENTY-EIGHT women who write are giving away books (including me). Twenty-eight lucky readers will get one book, and one winner will get a complete set of books! Learn more about how to enter, and find links to follow these lovely ladies on Twitter here.
I'm heading out to Third Place Books in a little bit for my second STAY event!!!
I'm staying with Lady, who I get to see maybe once a year if I'm really really lucky. We've been talking a mile a minute and laughing like crazy, which hasn't been conducive to sitting down and putting the links together (but has been very fun). But I will put up another massive links post tomorrow, I promise. And I so much love seeing all your STAY pictures and reading your e-mails and tweets and comments about how your dogs changed your life. It's wonderful! Thank you so very much!!!

The First STAY Event

Oh my gosh! Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that my first reading for STAY would be so freaking fantastic. There were so many people. I started reading to a really good sized crowd, and when I looked up at the audience a few paragraphs later, the room was completely packed with a crowd of people standing in the back. It was also as I started to read a more emotional scene, and, well, you know me -I started to get a little choked up.
The Q&A part of the event was so much fun. Great questions! It's so much fun to talk about the writing process with other writers and talk about dogs with other dog lovers. And signing books - oh, it doesn't get better than having a few minutes to chat with everyone who showed up. I got to see dog pictures and sign books that would be gifts to friends, and meet kids I'd only known from Facebook photos.
I am so completely amazed and so thankful to everyone who made the event so incredibly special. Getting to be in the same room and share my work with the people who have made Rochester my home over the past ten years truly is a dream come true. Old friends, new friends, work friends, blue friends (no, no one was blue, but I seemed to be headed in that direction).
And honestly, if you haven't been to the Greece Ridge Barnes & Noble, you are really missing something. The booksellers and staff are like a family of people who love love love books. I feel so thankful that they've taken me in and supported me through. Seeing STAY on the shelves is all the more special because I got to share this process with them.
Rebecca, the Community Relations Manager, even worked with my friends from high school to have the poster in the photo above sent up for the event. She unveiled it after I was done reading (thankfully, because I would have sobbed more than read if she'd done it before). It came with a card signed, from your oldest friends and friends from nursery school and summer camp and high school signed it for me. I am so touched, that not only did my friends put this together, but that Rebecca helped, and everyone at B&N kept it a secret!
I'll steal more photos from Facebook to post later, but the above is my favorite of the set J took. The lovely Ben Gonyo posing in front of the poster my friends sent up.
THANK YOU!!! And thank you to everyone who sends and tweets photos of my book with their dogs and kids and on shelves. It is so exciting to see STAY from your perspective. And I hope I get to meet so many of you while I'm out and about this summer.
And! More links!!!!!

Yikes! My first book event! And a whole lot of links!
I would be completely and totally lying if I said I wasn't nervous about the big event tonight. It's my first book event, and there are all those, What if I trip/What if the strap on my dress breaks/What if weeping angel statue aliens descend on the bookstore and steal my life force? fears, (I've been watching a lot of Doctor Who, and that episode was TERRIFYING!*).
But, I'm also completely and totally excited and so thrilled to see people I haven't seen in a very long time, and meet people I know from the internets in person for the very first time. And I'm also thrilled to meet new people who think it might be fun to show up to see some girl with messy hair read from a book with a big German Shepherd on the cover, because, if you think that way, I just automatically like you.
Okay, so I have to go make myself look more presentable than my usual yoga pants/writing sweater now, but I'll leave you with lots of links. Thank you so much to everyone who has been supporting STAY. Every one of these links have made me smile and cry and feel so honored. I put myself out there, and you guys offered up so much kindness in return. I love you so much for it. Thank you!!!!!!
I'll try to tweet a few pictures from the event.
Melissa Senate (You NEED to read THE SECRET OF JOY, by the way. It's wonderful!)
Mindi Scott (Look for her novel, FREEFALL in October 2010!)
If you write about STAY please e-mail the link to me at info at allielarkinwrites dot com. And if I miss you, let me know! Oh, the book brain! :)
*Did you see it? Let's discuss. Also, thoughts on the new Doctor?

It's Pub Day!!!!
Oh my goodness! I am really wishing I'd had the good sense to put waterproof mascara on today, because I have been a big old mess, and every time I think I've pulled it together, I get an e-mail or a tweet or a phone call or someone posts a picture of their dog with their copy of STAY and I lose it all over again. I feel like the luckiest person to know such kind and supportive people and I am completely humbled (and yes, I'm crying again). Today has been amazing.
I got to stop over at the Greece Barnes & Noble today, have lunch with Linda, who runs the Titles Over Tea book club (which is WONDERFUL), and her husband Roger, and I got visit with some of the booksellers. I'll be reading there tomorrow, and I'm thrilled. Everyone there is so welcoming and kind.
I bought a copy of my book. I don't know if you're supposed to do that, as a writer, and quite frankly, I don't care if you're not. Of course, I have my author copies, but I wanted to have that experience of walking into a store and buying my very own book for the very first time. Mike, one of my friends at B&N, sold it me, and I had HIM sign it. That's the copy I'll be reading from.
I'm over at Penguin's Blog today, blogging about how publishing a book is a little like skinny dipping, and I am completely honored to be there.
This is all, absolutely, a dream coming true. I heard COME AS YOU ARE by Nirvana on the radio today, and burst into tears (again). I had NEVERMIND on cassette when I was in high school and would listen to it over and over again. None of this would have ever seemed possible to me then. I am so completely and totally thankful for today.
J is taking me out to dinner to celebrate, and I don't have time to put all the links up before our reservation, so I will post a big long link post tomorrow. Promise!!!!

Quick, give me another song!
The other day, my sister-in-law posted on my Facebook wall that we were at the final countdown for the book and now I can't stop singing Europe.
We are so close, I can taste the grape Kool-Aid (which, after writing STAY, I will never be able to drink again, by the way).
I am also so completely overwhelmed (in a good way) by the support from all of you. This week marks the start of my blog tour, and it's been so amazing to get to answer questions and read posts by bloggers I know and love. THANK YOU!!!! Things don't ever feel quite real until you can share them with friends, and now, finally, it's all starting to sink in.
Holy crap! I wrote a book. :)
Here are some links, blog tour and otherwise, where STAY has been showing up. I'll be posting every day this week with updates as to my whereabouts online. Since I didn't post links yesterday, there's a one day delay on post links (if you're interested in the minute technical details of my link posting methodology).
Also, my co-Greenists have made it STAY week at The Greenists, and in honor of Van's penchant for the junkiest of junk food, NPW put up a recipe for organic pop rocks yesterday. Seriously! You knew NPW was awesome, but did you know she could make pop rocks?
If you're a writer, don't forget to enter the query letter contest.
And if you have the cure for singing Europe non-stop, please leave it in comments.
